Two new government studies indicate about 1 in 100 children have autism disorders — higher than a previous U.S. estimate of 1 in 150.
The new estimate would mean about 673,000 American children have autism. Previous estimates put the number at about 560,000.
Whether from drivers wising up or police officers easing up, or both, traffic tickets for using handheld phones behind the wheel are dropping in New Jersey.
The statewide monthly total fell 6 percentage points to 14 percent last year in every month from April through August, according to New Jersey Judiciary statistics.

The mayor of Liverpool has died after being hit by a train in what Brazoria County authorities say appears to be a suicide.
The train's engineer told investigators he spotted 42-year-old Mike Peters and tried to stop. The engineer also blew the train's whistle, but Peters didn't get off the tracks.
Investigators say Peters was in a family argument before he died and may have been intoxicated.
firefighters waged an aggressive ground and air assault Sunday against a wind-fanned wildfire that erupted in the San Gabriel Mountains and threatened a popular resort community.
Crews spent the day cutting fire lines while battling erratic winds. Helicopters and air tankers, dropped water and retardant on the blaze, which grew to 7,500 acres.
