Washington was waking up Wednesday to a new Senate make-up, one featuring Republican Massachusetts Senator-elect Scott Brown, who defeated Democrat Martha Coakley in a victory few thought possible just a month ago.

In his victory speech, Brown declared that he had "defied the odds and the pundits," and said he would try to be a "worthy successor" to Kennedy.

The man accused of stabbing to death an 88-year-old woman in front of her Linwood townhouse pleaded not guilty Tuesday.
Anthony Milano, 65, is accused of killing Catherine McGowan in a late-morning attack in the Village at Linwood on Oct. 8. McGowan’s daughter, Dianne Nehmad, 61, and an 84-year-old neighbor who came to the women’s rescue were wounded.
Milano did not speak during the brief hearing before Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury.


Republican Chris Christie was sworn in Tuesday as New Jersey's 55th governor, vowing to deliver the far-reaching change he said voters elected him to bring about.

Christie takes over a state plagued by the nation's highest taxes, a deficit that could hit $10 billion by July and unemployment near 10 percent.


A 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching the blockbuster Avatar in 3D, a doctor has told AFP Tuesday.
the man, who suffered from hypertension, was unconscious when he arrived at the Hospital and a scan showed that his brain was hemorrhaging,
"It's likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms,''
The victim died 11 days later from the brain hemorrhage,
Film blogging sites have reported complaints of headaches, dizziness, nausea and blurry eyesight from viewers of Avatar and other movies rich in 3D imagery.
